How Wide the Divide?

We consider the distance between the lives of, say, Adolf Hitler and Mother Teresa to be great. But what if the distance between leading a life like one and leading a life like the other is really only the distance between yes and no. And what if it only takes a second to make that decision? What if everything hinges on a single moment, albiet a recurring single moment? What if the distance between sinner and saint is as small as the second it takes to decide whether to live or jump?

I do think life is about making choices, hour by hour, day by day. Sometimes those choices come and go without much consequence and other times, they change the course of our lives more than we might even know at the time.

Did you guys ever see a movie with Gwyneth Paltrow called "Sliding Doors"? It's about exactly this idea. In one version of the story she just catches the subway train and her life goes one way, but in an alternate version she just misses the train and her life turns out quite differently... Worth renting if you've never seen it.
