More chords

I'm up to E, A, and D power chords, major triads, and minor triads as well as G and C major triads. One thing I love to do is just play the chords slowly, pick out a note and sing. I sing on "Oh" with all sorts of variations ("Oh-Ohohohoh-Ohohhhhohohhhhh"), changing my vocal tone with the chord changes. It usually starts peaceful and escalates until I'm really belting it out. This is not Showtime at Rockefeller Center (just ask my wife), but it sure is fun.

At one point tonight I played an A minor chord that reached up and grabbed me in the gut. It had all this emotion in it, somehow. There is something haunting about those minor chords. Beautiful and mysterious.

I love this. I don't know why I didn't pick guitar up sooner.

Sometimes when it's just me and this hundred-year-old house with wooden floors that bang the sound all over--sometimes my playing and my singing, they become a prayer. And what's beautiful is that I could never pray with words the way I can with music. Reggie Kidd in With One Voice said something like music is our soul's language for speaking to God, and doing this guitar thing, I think I understand some of what he means.
